Take it slowly, step by step. Often times, writing classes are very much a never-ending test on following directions and critical thinking. Choose a topic that you find interesting, that you know something about.
Make sure you have narrowed the topic down to something manageable for the allotted space. Brainstorm ideas about your essay. Use mind-mapping or scratch outlines to help keep things organized. Once you do this, put it aside for a little while.
Go take a breather; then come back with a fresh mind. This will allow you to come up with more ideas. Once you have your ideas on paper, and you have a working thesis statement, write a rough draft. Don't worry about grammar, spelling, or punctuation at this point.
Take a day off. Go to the movies, go ride a bike, go out dancing. Don't look at the paper; don't think about it. Now that you've taken time off, reread your essay. Make sure the following are in tact--thesis statement and topic sentences.
Make sure each topic sentence clearly supports the thesis. Read the details and examples. Every example must support the topic sentences. If anything doesn't support it, cross it out. Then as you read each example, ask yourself one question: Will the person understand it? If the answer is no, then you need to go back and be more specific.
Paint a picture with words.
It is the details that make your writing interesting. The more specific you are, the more interesting your paper will be. Take more time off--at least another day or so. Go back and read again.
Check for organization and clarity. Now is the time to move whole sentences or even whole paragraphs, so everything flows in a logical manner. Take another day off. Don't look at it. Don't think about it. The more distance between you and your essay the better.
Proofread for grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Sometimes it helps to read it out loud. If you stumble over something, if something just sounds weird, that is your clue that something is wrong. Your ear can sometimes pick up what your eyes don't. Focus on your favorite errors.
For example, if you know you tend to have a problem with run-ons, read slowly, one sentence at a time, focusing on the run-ons and correcting them. Word to the wise. Don't rely on Word's grammar checker.
